This quilt won't talk

I finally finished picking out the quilting I had started on this Sparkling Trail quilt last January or February.  The quilt sat untouched for months until I acknowledged the fact that it wouldn't fix itself.  Now I'm back to pondering what to quilt.  I don't know about you, but I've had some quilts be very talkative, telling me exactly how they should be quilted.  This one is very, very quiet.

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you've seen this pattern a few times.  The first version was very heavily freemotion quilted.  The second was quilted in concentric circles with my walking foot.

I still haven't quilted the little mini versions (here and here).

I really need to get this purple one done. Though I had never used purple before, I love the colors in this quilt.  It needs to be finished and out on the living room couch to be used and appreciated.  So please, send me suggestions! With a few ideas to prod it, maybe this quilt will start talking to me properly!

  1. It is a gorgeous quilt, too bad it is mute. I would make the three blue star sparkle with long lines emanating from them towards the edges, thru the purples stars. But that is what I would do, not what the quilt wants. Have you set it up on the long arm yet? Maybe it will start to talk once it is all prepped up? Anywho! Good luck with this beauty. ;^)

  2. Oh, that is a tough one. I have quilts that are very stubborn and I usually start with stitch-in-the-ditch and while I do that, it starts talking. But I don't know that SITD lends itself to this quilt, with all of the open space. Wish I had an idea for you--but it is very pretty!

  3. I like very simple quilting. The old saying "the quilting makes the quilt" doesn't work for me. I like the fabric and the design to be the main focus. So if I were quilting this I might just line up my 2" painters tape (that looks about the size of your diamonds) with the diamonds and make a cross-hatched background. I love all of your versions of this quilt. Good luck finishing! CN

  4. How about and all over design with stars? Leah Day has a library of nearly 500 fmq designs on her website, too if that might help.

  5. It is beautiful. I love the quilt in all of its various colourways. I would try to find a way to quilt it that would bring out your amazing stars.

  6. Oh my goodness you have made so many gorgeous versions of this quilt! When I made a quilt of all triangles it took me forever and I complained constantly about matching all the seams with 6 layers of triangles!

  7. Well, I still have never done this, but what about going all modern and just do either straight lines vertically about every 1/2" or less OR do 'organic' wavy lines about the same spacing like Lorna does on her quilts?

  8. Have you thought of echo quilting in the background?

  9. I think I might stitch in the ditch around the stars and all the seams inside the stars, then inside the stars I would stitch maybe 1/4" inside the stitch lines in each triangle. In the white space, maybe echoing to fill in the space. To get ideas sometimes I search "quilting designs for (block name or description) in Pinterest. That's been helpful a few times.

  10. Love the mini quilts but to me, they look quilted already. I have a hard time figuring out how to quilt things too. I love using lines of serpentine stitching- it gives a marvelous texture.

  11. Choosing a quilt design (unless I'm at the Longarmer and then she does it) is what holds up completion of most of my projects. I'm such a ditherer and it takes forever to decide how I'll quilt a project. Wish I could do those gorgeous feathers Ruth and Love have perfected.
