Iterations

I had a burst of activity to reimagine my snowflake quilt over two weeks ago, then the borders slowed me down just like the windrow at the bottom of a driveway after the snowplow goes by.

It looks OK in this photo, but in full scale that inner white border wasn’t working.  Try again.

I took the white border out and proceeded full speed ahead, sewing blue borders before the pieced border.  Hmm.  Not quite right either.  You can’t see it in this photo, but the aspect ratio of the blue center with blue borders was off, and made the snowflakes look lost on the background.

OK fine, how about a skinnier inner white border than the one I tried initially?

I didn’t sew anything on this time.  It’s all just clinging to the design wall.  It’s better, but still not quite right.

Close!  I think the final product may look very much like this. I just need to tweak the border widths.  I need the plain borders to add up to the right width to make the pieced border fit.

First, I’m off to the kitchen to put some Christmas cookies in the oven.  I need energy to tackle these borders!

  2. Borders can be so much fun, when they work out the first time. I like the border in the last photo best. This is going to be lovely when done.

  5. It's going to be a beautiful winter-y quilt whatever you decide to do to finish it. Maybe my brain works backwards, but I think you nailed it on the first try--sorry!!

  10. Isn't it amazing what happened when you just flipped those blocks?? It looks fabulous! OK, now you have me thinking. . . those snowflakes. I have several of them. Fabric for more. . . I think they are officially my first UFO!! And they are so undeserving of such a title. . . need to get at those!

  11. Wow. I don't want to be the one to decide, because I actually like your first version!!
And I like your reference to the snow at the end of the driveway, calling it a windrow. Never heard that before. We in western NY call it a snow drift! And sometimes we put cuss words before it . . . :)
    No snow yet though!

  12. Wow you flipped the Delectable Mountains, which make me think of icicles btw, on the last one! Personally I really like the second to the last layout, but I can't see the whole quilt whereas you can! Thanks for giving me thoughts as to what I can do with my remaining 3 snowflakes. :-) Of course I will probably HAVE to make 2 more...3 just isn't enough in a lap quilt, lol.

  13. I like the white border versions. How skinny is hard to tell from photos, but I think it adds something. Maybe we'll go with that little bit of snow that piles on your window ledge, like a frame? :) It's a beautiful quilt, though, and with the paper piecing, more than I'd tackle right now!

  16. Joanne, I love the snowflakes and delectable mountains together and every version of your borders looked great to me!
My sister-in-law just asked for two runners of your snowflakes. I'll be making them, but it will have to be for next Christmas.
