Shifting Crystals by Canuck Quilter Designs Made with fabric from the Fossil Finesse collection from Island Batik, a division of Lumin Fabrics |
It needs another photo shoot. My supportive husband trekked out with me on a very cold January day so we could take pretty pictures before I shipped the quilt to Island Batik for their April catalog. By the time we photographed this quilt my fingers were freezing. I landed flat on my back when I slipped on the ice. I was ready to be done and rushed through. I think I might manage better pictures now that the quilt is back home and the weather has warmed up.
The chevrons in this design are strip-pieced, so they are quick and easy to make. If you've made Leading Edge or Echo Point you know how these work. The key to making these is the diamond-shaped segments cut from the strip sets. The pattern illustrates and explains how to measure the diamond segments, but you might also find this tutorial helpful. Just remember you should NOT be measuring along the top edge of the strip. Trust me. Just check out the tutorial and the instructions and email me if you still need help!
What a pretty quilt. You always pick such great colors!
ReplyDeleteYou've done it again...........blown me away with such an awesome quilt. Well done. Take care & hugs from Oz.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanne - this is so helpful, I never knew what "spinning" meant. In the situation of piecing rows of a nine-patch that are pieced themselves (your last example), I usually just press open the seam bc I didnt know about this technique. Is it OK to press open the seam or should I switch? TY! Abbie. PS I just finished my quilt top from your Small Change GORGEOUS quilt pattern, it's at the long armer's - and I'll send you a photo. I love this pattern and plan to make another quilt from it. And maybe another after that! It reminds me of Pennsylvania Dutch designs.
ReplyDeletePressing is a matter of preference. I personally don't like to press open unless I absolutely have to. Pressing open doesn't allow for quilting in the ditch, and a seam pressed open may not hold up as well to the kind of use a quilt gets. I also find it harder to match seams when I press open. That said, I know some quilter love to press open and have good results. Do what works best for you!
